Flushing, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team raised its overall season record to 21-15-1 on Thursday night with a non-conference doubleheader sweep over the Dominican (N.Y.) College Chargers at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. In the opener, the Purple Knights scored nine runs in the first inning on their way to 10-2 victory, and in game two, UB scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to walk-off with a 4-3 triumph.
In game one, sophomore Daren Grabowski (Berlin, Conn.) went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in, and junior Casey Ouellette (New Canaan, Conn.) also had three hits, as part of a 15-hit UB attack, and knocked in a run.
Senior Alec Jannotta (Branford, Conn.) had two hits and two RBI in game one, as did junior Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.). Junior Tyler Gambardella (West Haven, Conn.) also had two hits for the winners in the opener.
On the mound, junior Anthony Alicki (Milford, Conn.) worked six strong innings to get the win in game one, as he allowed only four hits and one earned run with six strikeouts and three walks in those six frames.
In the nightcap, the Purple Knights trailed, 3-2, heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, and the team was down to its final out before staging a dramatic, game-winning rally. Daren Grabowski started the rally with a triple to left center, and Grabowski scored to tie the score at 3-3, when the next batter, Casey Ouellette singled up the middle. Ouellette would then move to third base with the winning run on a hit-and single by sophomore Ben Torres (Hollywood, Fla.). After Torres stole second base, senior Alnaydo Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) lashed a base hit to right center to lift the Purple Knights to the 4-3 win.
Sophomore Andrew Oswald (St. James, N.Y.) picked up the win in relief in game two to raise his season record to 4-2, as he pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball in which he allowed only one hits a fanned two without issuing a base on balls.
Up next, the UB baseball team will open an important, four-game, weekend East Coast Conference series with the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College on Friday morning at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
