West Haven, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team used timely hitting and quality pitching on Saturday afternoon to pick up an East Coast Conference doubleheader sweep over the LIU Post Pioneers in a pair of games played at West Haven High School, as the Purple Knights won game one, 6-4, plating all six runs with two outs, and completed the sweep with an 8-1 win in the nightcap. With the sweep, UB is now 17-11-1 overall and 10-5 in the ECC. LIUP is now 12-19 overall and 4-11 in conference play.
In the opener, junior Tyler Gambardella (West Haven, Conn.) had two hits and three runs batted in with a bases-clearing double.
Classmate Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) had two hits and one RBI in the opener, and junior Justin Carey (Amherst, Mass.), who had five total hits on the day, picked up three in game one. Sophomore Ben Torres (Hollywood, Fla.) added two hits as part of a 12-hit attack for the winners in the opener.
On the mound, senior Rob Anderson (Stratford, Conn.) picked up the win in game one to raise his season mark to 3-1, as he worked seven strong innings, allowing only four hits, two runs (both earned) with seven K's and no walks.
In game two, senior, righty Ridge Ackerman (Springfield, Ill.) picked up his first victory of 2016, as he dominated the Pioneers firing a three-hit complete game win in which he allowed only three hits with no earned runs. Ackerman stuck out four and walk two over his seven innings on the mound.
At the plate for the Purple Knights in game two, Gambardella added two more hits and two more runs batted in.
Senior Alnaydo Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) and sophomore Daren Grabowski (Berlin, Conn.), each had two hits and an RBI for the winners in the nightcap.
Sophomore Jose Negron (New Haven, Conn.) chipped in two hits for the Purple Knights in game two, as the team again totaled 12 hits in the game.
The same two teams will close out their four-game weekend series at LIU Post on Sunday afternoon with a single, nine-inning game. First pitch on Long Island is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
