Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team opened its 2016 East Coast Conference schedule on Friday afternoon with a home double header against the Queens (N.Y.) College Knights, and the two teams split the pair with UB taking game one, 10-4, and QC coming back to win game two, 3-1. With the split, Bridgeport is now 7-7-1 overall and 1-1 in the ECC. Queens moves to 7-9 overall and is also 1-1 in conference action.
In game one, the Purple Knights banged out 14 hits led by junior Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) and senior Alnaydo Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.), who each went 2-for-4 with 3 runs batted and two runs scored. Rodriguez blasted his team-leading fifth home run in the game.
Sophomore Ben Torres (Hollywood, Fla.) also homered for the winners in game one and had two hits and two RBI.
UB senior Alec Jannotta (Branford, Conn.), junior Casey Ouellette (New Canaan, Conn.) and sophomore Jose Negron (New haven, Conn.) also had a pair of hits apiece in the opener.
On the mound, sophomore Andrew Oswald (St. James, N.Y.) picked up the win in relief to even his season mark at 1-1. Oswald worked 4.2 scoreless innings allowing only two hits with nine strikeouts and two walks.
In the nightcap, the Purple Knights' only run was driven in by Ben Torres in the second inning.
The same two teams will continue their four-game conference series tomorrow with a single, nine-inning game hosted by Queens in Flushing, N.Y. First pitch is slated for 12 noon.
