Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team swept an East Coast Conference doubleheader at Mercy College on Friday afternoon, winning game one, 4-0, and completing the sweep with a 7-6 victory in game two. The Purple Knights, who have now won four in a row and six of their last seven outings, are 10-15 overall and 6-3 in conference play. The host Mavericks are now 5-16 overall and 1-9 in the ECC.
In the opener, sophomore Anthony Alicki (Milford, Conn.) dominated on the mound for the Purple Knights working a nine-inning, complete game shutout in which he allowed only three singles. Alicki struck out seven and walked two on the day, as he raised his season record to 3-2.
At the plate for Bridgeport in the opener, seniors Tim Bickford (Wallingford, Conn.) and John Ascenzia (West Haven, Conn.), sophomore Tyler Gambardella (West Haven, Conn.) and freshman Jose Negron (New Haven, Conn.) each had two hits to help propel the 10-hit UB offensive attack. Bickford knocked in two runs in game one, one of which came on a solo home run to open the second inning. Gambardella and junior Dave Egeland (Toms River, N.J.) had the other RBIs for Bridgeport.
In game two, the Purple Knights scored six runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed. Senior left-hander, Brian O'Keefe (Milford, Conn.) picked up the win on the mound in the nightcap going five innings in which he allowed four hits, two earned runs (six total) while striking out nine and walking three. The victory gives Brian a 2-1 record so far this season and moves him into a tie with several players atop the University of Bridgeport career wins list with 12 during his time in a UB uniform.
Freshman Kevin Johnson (Milford, Conn.) worked two perfect relief innings with two strike outs to earn his second save of 2015 and give the win to O'Keefe and the Purple Knights.
UB and Mercy will continue their four-game series on Saturday afternoon in Bridgeport with a nine-inning, single game at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m.
