Baseball Splits A Pair Of One-Run Contests With Molloy
UB Takes Game One, 4-3, And Molloy Wins Game Two, 1-0
West Haven, Conn.-The UB baseball team is now 13-10-1 overall and 7-12 in the East Coast Conference after splitting a Saturday doubleheader with the Molloy College Lions that was played at West haven High School. The Purple Knights took game one, 4-3, as junior Mike Perry (East Haven, Conn.) knocked in what proved to the winning runs in the bottom of the eighth inning with a clutch, two-out, two-RBI single. In game two, Molloy's Shea Spitzbarth outdueled Bridgeport's Dakota Edwards (Fr., Turlock, Calif.) in a 1-0 pitchers' duel. With the split, Molloy is now 14-16 overall and 7-8 in conference play.
Freshmen Dylan Steigerwald (Holbrook, N.Y.) and Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) each had two hits in the opener for the Purple Knights.
Perry's hit in the eighth made a winner of senior Mike Nowak (Latham, N.Y.) who is now 2-0 on the season. Nowak worked eight innings as the starter, and junior Clayton Morris (Sharpsburg, Georgia) worked a scoreless ninth to earn his second save of 2014.
In game two, Molloy's Spitzbarth allowed UB only one hit, a fourth inning double by junior Tim Bickford (Wallingford, Conn.) as he picked up the 1-0 victory. Bridgeport's Dakota Edwards also worked a seven-inning complete game in which he allowed only four hits and one run while striking out five and walking three. Edwards is now 3-3 on the year.
UB and Molloy will close out their four-game East Coast Conference series at Molloy on Monday afternoon.
