Baseball Swept In ECC-Opening Doubleheader By St. Thomas Aquinas
Purple Knights Fall, 9-1 And 8-0
Lyndhurst, N.J.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team dropped both ends of East Coast Conference season-opening doubleheader on Friday afternoon, as the Purple Knights lost to Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas, 9-1 and 8-0, in games played at Breslin Field in Lyndhurst, New Jersey. UB is now 6-10 overall and 0-2 in the ECC. STAC ups its overall record to 8-5, and the Spartans are 2-0 in conference action.
In the opener, freshman Tyler Gambardella (West Haven, Conn.) had two hits, one of which was a double, and classmate Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) knocked in the Purple Knights' only run of the afternoon.
In game two, Bridgeport was limited to only one hit by three STAC pitchers, and infield single by senior Jesse Solar (Marlton, N.J.).
Freshman Dakota Edwards (Turlock, California) started game two for UB and pitched well even though he absorbed the loss, as he went six inning in which he allowed only one run on three hits with four strike outs and three walks.
The same two teams will close out their weekend series on Sunday with a doubleheader in which St. Thomas Aquinas will be the home team for both games that will be played on the campus of NYIT in Old Westbury, New York. First pitch is slated for 12 noon.
