Myrtle Beach, S.C.-Pitching ruled the day as the Univrsity of Bridgeport baseball team went 1-1 on day two of the Purple Knights weekend trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. UB opened the day with a 4-1 win over the Felician College Golden Falcons and closed out Saturday with a tough 2-0 loss against Franklin Pierce University, the 2013 NCAA Division II East Regional championships. Bridgeport heads in Sunday morning's final game in South Carline versus Southern New Hampshire University with a 2-1 record.
Against Felician, freshman Adam Thayer (Ansonia, Conn.) was magnificent in his collegiate debut picking up the win in his first start hurling three-hit ball over eight innings in which he allowed only one run while fanning seven and issuing only three walks. Fellow newcomer Dakota Edwards (Fr., Turlock, California) picked up the save versus the Golden Falcons pitching a hitless and scoreless ninth inning in which he struck out two.
With the game tied 1-1 heading into the top of the eighth inning, Bridgeport scored three runs to take a 4-1 lead which they never relinquished.
Freshman Matt Costleigh (West Islip, N.Y.), Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) and Dylan Steigerwald (Holbrook, N.Y.) each had three hits for the winners in Saturday's opening game.
Against Franklin Pierce, junior lefty Brian O'Keefe (Milford, Conn.) was the hard-luck loser working into the ninth inning of a scoreless game when the Ravens scored two unearned runs for the only scoring of the contest. O'Keefe pitched 8.1 innings in which he allowed five hits, those two unearned runs, struck five and walked only one.
Senior Brock Roggie (Lowville, N.Y.) was the only UB batter with multiple hits in Saturday's nightcap going 2-for-4.
