Baseball Tops Nyack, 9-7, In 2014 Season Opener
Purple Knights Plate Two Runs In The Bottom Of The Eighth To Snap 7-7 Tie
Myrtle Beach, S.C.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team got its 2014 season off on the right foot on Friday, as the Purple Knights pushed across a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of eighth inning to snap a 7-7 tie, as UB posted a 9-7 win over the Nyack College Warriors in the season opener for both squads played at the Riken Experience Complex in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Bridgeport took advantage of three Nyack errors to score a total of five unearned on the day, and the Purple Knights also stole home twice in the win.
Newcomer Clayton Morris (Jr., Sharpsburg, Georgia) picked up the win in relief in the 2014 season opener, as he retired all four batters he faced to end the game.
At the plate, junior catcher Tim Bickford (Wallingford, Conn.) went 4-for-5 with two runs batted in. Senior Jesse Solar (Marlton, N.J.) banged out a pair of doubles and drove in a run, and freshman Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) had two hits in his UB debut.
For Nyack, Eric Roe blasted a home run, and Jan-Pierre Crespo had three hits.
UB will play two games on Saturday in Myrtle Beach, as the Purple Knights face Felician College in the morning followed by a contest against East Region power, Franklin Pierce University, in the afternoon.
