Purple Knights Lose Both Ends Of An ECC Baseball Doubleheader At LIU Post On Saturday
UB Now Locked In As Number Four Seed In Next Week's ECC Championship Tournament
Brookville, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team lost both ends of an East Coast Conference road doubleheader versus LIU Post on a beautiful Spring Saturday afternoon on Long Island, as the Pioneers blanked the Purple Knights, 6-0 , in the opener and held on to win game two, 6-5. UB is now 19-24 overall and 12-11 in the ECC. LIU Post is now 16-28 overall and 8-15 in conference play. With the two losses, UB is now locked into the number four seed for next week's East Coast Conference Championship Tournament and will open play against the number one seed, St. Thomas Aquinas College.
In game one, Bridgeport was limited to a total of only three hits, and in the nightcap, the Purple Knights try to rally from deficits of 4-0 and 6-2, but just fell short, as the game ended with two UB runners on base.
In game two, junior John Ascenzia (West Haven, Conn.) went 3-for-4 at the plate, and senior Mike Olszyk (Hamden, Conn.) and sophomore Tim Bickford (Wallingford, Conn.), each went 2-for-4. Olszyk knocked in one run, and Bickford plated two with a two-run homer, his third long ball of the year. Freshman Nick Zieniuk (Margate, N.J.) stayed hot a plate in the nightcap as he also had two hits, and senior T.J. Mangan (Bronx, N.Y.) drove in the other UB run in game two.
The Purple Knights and the Pioneers will close out the four-game weekend series and complete the 2013 regular season with a single game at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Sunday. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m., and Sunday is also Senior Day with that ceremony slated to begin at approximately 4:45 p.m.
