Freshman Nick Zieniuk Gives Baseball A Walk-Off Win Over Molloy And Split Of Key ECC Doubleheader
Purple Knights Rally In Last Inning Of Nightcap To Grab 5-4 Win After Dropping Game One, 8-3
West Haven, Conn.-Freshman Nick Zieniuk (Margate, N.J.) gave the University of Bridgeport a 5-4 walk-off win over the visiting Molloy College Lions with a sacrifice fly in the both of the seventh inning of game two of a key East Coast Conference doubleheader as he plated junior John Ascenzia (West Haven, Conn.), who had tied the game at 4-4 with a double earlier in the inning, as the Purple Knights and Lions split on the day, as Molloy took the nine-inning opener, 8-3. With the split, UB is now 18-20 overall and 11-9 in the ECC. Molloy is now 21-23 overall and 12-8 in conference action.
Bridgeport's walk-off heroics mad a winner of junior pitcher Mike Nowak (Latham, N.Y), who upped his season mark to 5-3, with a complete game, nine-hit performance in which he struck out eight and walked two.
Senior Mike Olszyk (Hamden, Conn.) also drove in two runs for the Purple Knights in the nightcap.
In game one, Ascenzia, Olszyk and Zieniuk, each had two hits in a losing effort.
The UB baseball team is right back in action on Monday afternoon (April 29) when they host Wilmington (Del.) University at 4:00 p.m. in a non-conference tilt at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
