Run To ECC Title Ends For UB Baseball As Dowling Posts 7-0 Win To Claim Conference Crown
Purple Knights Battle Through Losers' Bracket But Fall Just Short Of Conference Title
Queens, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team saw its run toward an East Coast Conference title come to an end on Saturday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Field on the campus of St. John's University, as the fourth seeded Purple Knights were defeated by the second seeded Dowling College Golden Lions, 7-0. Dowling's Tyler Badamo was the story for the 2012 ECC Champions, as he blanked the Purple Knights on only two hits. UB ends its 2012 season with an 18-21 record, and Dowling moves on to the NCAA Division II Championship which will begin next week with a 31-17 overall mark. DC went a perfect 3-0 to win this year's East Coast Conference crown.
After losing in Thursday's opening game of the 2012 ECC Championship, the Purple Knights battled back through the losers' bracket posting two one-run victories on Friday to reach championship Saturday where they needed to defeat Dowling twice to win the ECC title.
Senior Matt Nassi (N. Providence, R.I.) had both Bridgeport hits on the day.
Junior Anthony Tortolano (Exeter, R.I.) made the start and pitched well for the Purple Knights going 6.1 innings in which he allowed five runs only two of which were earned. Saturday's loss was Tortolano's first of 2012 as he finished the year with a 2-1 record.
