Baseball Rolls To 9-5 Win At Queens
UB Continues Last Season Push For ECC Playoff Spoy
Flushing, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team raised its overall record to 11-18, and more importantly, stayed in the hunt for a playoff spot in the 2012 East Coast Conference Championship with a 9-5 road win over the host Queens (N.Y.) College Knights on Saturday afternoon in New York City. The Purple Knights, who are now 7-11 in conference play, raced out to a 7-0 lead after three innings on their way to the victory. QC is now 12-23 overall and 6-12 in the ECC.
Lead-off hitter John Ascenzia (So., West Haven, Conn.) was an offensive force on Saturday for Bridgeport going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and one RBI.
Senior Eric Schlitter (Guilford, Conn.) continued his recent hot streak at the dish with a 3-for-5 afternoon that included a two-RBI triple.
Senior Matt Nassi (N. Providence, R.I.) and sophomore Jesse Solar (Marlton, N.J.) also added two hits as a part of Bridgeport's 13-hit offensive attack on Saturday. Solar had two runs batted in, as did senior Matt Ranaudo (Milford, Conn.) for the winners.
Starting pitcher, junior Matt Wing (Brookville, Ontario, Canada) even his season record at 3-3 with seven strong innings pitched, in which he did not allow a run on only four hits.
The same two teams will meet again on Sunday afternoon in West Haven, Conn. at West Haven High School for a doubleheader that will begin at 1:00 p.m.
