Baseball Splits ECC Doubleheader At Mercy
Purple Knights Fall In Game One, 7-6, And Earn Split With 9-3 Victory In Game Two
Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team split an East Coast Conference doubleheader with the host Mercy College Mavericks on Saturday afternoon, as Mercy scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win game one, 7-6, and the Purple Knights scored eight runs in the top of the fourth inning to post a 9-3 win in game two to earn the split. UB is now 6-11 overall and 3-5 in the ECC. Mercy is now 6-20 overall and 4-7 in conference play.
In the opener, Mercy scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the 7-6 win. Senior Nick Vautrin (S. Hadley, Mass.) took the loss for UB in game one to see his overall record fall to 1-5 on the year.
On offense in the opener, senior Matt Ranaudo (Milford, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, and sophomore Kyle Ferri (Milford, Conn.) had three hits.
In game two, senior Eric Schlitter (Guilford, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with a triple and a three-run home run and scored two for the winners. Matt Ranaudo continued his torrid pace at the plate in the nightcap adding two more hits, and sophomore Jesse Solar (Marlton, N.J.) had a base-clearing double in UB's eight-run, fourth inning.
Junior Chris Maull (Winslow, N.J.) pitched a complete game in game two to pick up his first win of 2012. Maull struck out eight batters in his seven innings of work.
Bridgeport and Mercy will meet again on Monday afternoon in Bridgeport for a single game at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
