Purple Knights Rally With Six Runs In Bottom Of The Ninth To Pick Up An 8-7 Non-Conference Baseball Win Over Pace
UB Victorious In 2012 Home Opener
Bridgeport, Conn.-Sophomore Jesse Solar's (Marlton, N.J.) sacrifice fly scored pinch runner Kyle Ferri (So., Milford, Conn.) from third base to cap a six-run bottom of the ninth inning rally, as the University of Bridgeport baseball team came back to defeat the Pace University Setters, 8-7, in a non-conference game played at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The victory snaps a four-game losing streak for the Purple Knights, who are now 2-6 overall. Pace is now an even 7-7 for the 2012 season.
The Purple Knights capitalized on four walks and two hit batters to score six runs with only two hits off a parade of four different Pace pitchers in the bottom of the ninth.
Sophomore Paul Spadacenta (East Haven, Conn.) picked up the victory for UB pitching a perfect top of the ninth with one strike out. Freshman Jonathan Chudy took the loss for Pace.
In the decisive bottom of the ninth, Bridgeport got runs batted in from junior Mike Olszyk (Hamden, Conn.), sophomore Michael James (Piscataway. N.J.), senior Amar Lewis (Troy, N.Y.), junior Berny Polanco (Dominican Republic), senior Matt Ranaudo (Milford, Conn.) and Solar's game-winner.
The University of Bridgeport baseball team is right back in action on Wednesday afternoon, as the Purple Knights travel to C.W. Post to open East Coast Conference play. Game time on Long Island is set for 3:00 p.m.
