Big First Inning Helps Baseball To 10-6 Win Over Mercy
Purple Knights Now 20-8 In ECC Play And 27-11 Overall in 2011
West Haven, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team jumped on the Mercy College Mavericks with five runs in the bottom of the first inning, and the Purple Knights never trailed in the game as they posted a 10-6 East Conference Coast win on Saturday in game played at West Haven (Conn.) High School. With the win, UB is now 27-11 overall and 20-8 in the ECC. Mercy falls to 17-25 overall and 10-18 in conference play.
Senior captain Gaetano Giunta (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Bridgeport offensive attack going 3-for-5 with a pair of triples, three runs scored and one RBI.
Senior Tyler Moffatt (Colonie, N.Y.) and junior Ryan Barba (Stratford, Conn.), each had two hits on the day and Barba also knocked in a pair of runs. Senior catcher Mike DeLellis (Marlton, N.J.) also had two runs batted in for the Purple Knights.
On the mound for Bridgeport, senior Anthony Plomitallo (New Hyde Park, N.Y.), who started the game, was credited with win to raise his season mark to an unblemished 4-0. Plomitallo pitched 6.1 innings in which he allowed eight hits, five runs (four earned), two walks and fanned dour batters. Junior Matt Bartolomei (Stratford, Conn.) worked 2.2 innings in relief to pick up save number eight of the year.
Bridgeport and Mercy will close out their five-game ECC series on Sunday afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. game at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
