Bartolomei And Barrows Help Purple Knights To Split With St. Thomas Aquinas
Baseball Takes Game Two of ECC Doubleheader, 1-0, After Falling In Game One, 3-2
Bridgeport, Conn.-Junior Matt Bartolomei (Strafford, Conn.) pitched a masterful two-hit shutout, and senior Peter Barrows (Old Saybrook, Conn.) drove in the game's only run with a clutch one-out RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the University of Bridgeport baseball team to a 1-0 game two win over the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans and a split of the team's East Coast Conference doubleheader in a cold Bridgeport, Conn. on Saturday afternoon. STAC rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win game one of the twinbill, 3-2. With the split, Bridgeport is now 15-8 overall and 8-5 in the ECC. St. Thomas Aquinas is now 17-14-1 overall and 8-6 in conference play.
With game two scoreless heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, UB's Gaetano Giunta (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.), who had two hits in the nightcap, led off the inning with a hard single to left-field. After a passed ball moved Guinta to second base, Barrows, who also had two hits in game two, doubled to right-center to plate the game's only run and give Bartolomei, who pitched a seven-inning complete game in which he struck out five and walked three to go along with allowing only two hits, all the offense he would need to raise his season record to 3-1.
In the opener, junior Matt Ranuado (Milford, Conn.) had the lone Bridgeport run batted in.
The Purple Knights and the Spartans are scheduled to square off in the rubber game of their five-game East Coast Conference series on Sunday afternoon with STAC hosting the game at Dutchess County Stadium. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
