UB Baseball Sweeps Nyack, 8-2 and 7-2
Purple Knights Have Now Won Eight Of Their Last Nine Games
Bridgeport, Conn.-After seeing its six-game winning streak snapped on Thursday afternoon, the University of Bridgeport baseball team got right back in the win column on Saturday afternoon with a home non-conference doubleheader sweep of the Nyack College Warriors. UB took game one, 8-2, and the Purple Knights completed the sweep with 7-2 victory in game two. Bridgeport, winners of eight of its last nine games, is now 13-6 overall in 2011. Nyack remains winless at 0-24 so far this season.
In the opener, junior Matt Nassi (N. Providence, R.I.) drove in three runs for the winners, plus junior Matt Ranaudo (Milford, Conn.) and senior Mike DeLellis (Marlton, N.J.), each chipped in two runs batted in. DeLellis also was the only UB player to register more than one base hit in game one, as he had two base knocks.
Starter Shaun Hancock (Jr., Oakville, Ontario, Canada) pitched five innings of scoreless ball to pick up his team-leading fourth win of the season, as he is now 4-1. Shaun, who has now thrown 12 consecutive scoreless innings, allowed five hits with five strike outs and no walks on Saturday.
In game two, junior Eric Schlitter (Guilford, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in for the Purple Knights. Senior captain Gaetano Giunta (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also had two hits for UB.
Senior Anthony Plomitallo (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) started game two for Bridgeport and worked four innings in which he allowed two runs on three hits to pick up the win. Plomitallo is now a perfect 2-0 on the season.
The Bridgeport bullpen was outstanding in game two working three scoreless innings of one-hit baseball. Sophomore Chris Maull (Winslow, N.J.) allowed one hit in two innings, and junior Matt Bartolomei (Strafford, Conn.), who closed out both games on Saturday), worked a perfect seventh inning in which he fanned to batters.
The UB baseball team returns to East Coast Conference action at St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday afternoon.
