Baseball Snaps Four-Game Skid With 12-6 Win Over Molloy
Eric Schlitter Drives In Five Runs As Purple Knights Score A Season-High 12 Runs
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team snapped a four-game losing streak on Monday afternoon by scoring a season-high 12 runs in a 12-6 East Coast Conference victory over the Molloy College Lions. With the win, UB is now 6-5 overall and 1-3 in ECC play. Molloy is now 11-10 overall and 3-1 in conference action.
Junior first baseman Eric Schlitter (Guilford, Conn.) led a 13-hit Bridgeport attack on Monday by going 4-for-5 at the plate with five runs batted in. Eric raised his batting average to .395 with Monday's four-hit performance, and he leads the Purple Knights in RBIs with nine so far this season.
The top three hitters in the Bridgeport line-up, Gaetano Guinta (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.), John Ascenzia (Fr., West Haven, Conn.) and Tyler Moffatt (Sr., Colonie, N.Y.), each had three runs scored on Monday, and Guinta also had two hits including a triple to begin the game on the right foot for UB.
Senior outfielder Peter Barrows (Old Saybrook, Conn.) also had two hits for the Purple Knights on the day and drove in two runs.
Freshman Ryan Garcia (Franklin Square, N.Y.) picked up the win in relief for Bridgeport. Garcia is now 1-0 on the season.
Junior Matt Bartolomei (Strafford, Conn.) pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless and hitless relief, in which he retired all four hitters he faced, to close out the game for UB. Bridgeport pitchers struggled with their control all afternoon as they issued 12 walks and hit four batters.
The UB baseball team is back in action on Tuesday afternoon at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard, as the Purple Knights host C.W. Post in an ECC tilt. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. Bridgeport and Molloy will complete their five-game East Coast Conference series on Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. on Long Island.
