Baseball Swept On The Road In A Pair Of Pitchers Duels By Molloy
Both Games Go Eight Innings, As Lions Take Game One, 2-1, And Game Two, 3-2
Uniondale, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team opened its 2011 East Coast Conference schedule on Saturday afternoon with a road doubleheader against Molloy College, and the Purple Knights lost a pair of extra inning pitchers' duals, falling in game one, 2-1 in eight innings and losing the nightcap, 3-2, also in eight innings. Bridgeport is now 5-4 overall and 0-2 in the ECC. Molloy raises its overall record to 10-9, and the Lions are 2-0 in conference play.
In game one, starter Nick Vautrin (Jr., South Hadley, Mass.) pitched well allowing only one run over seven innings pitched in which he struck out seven batters and allowed only four hits.
Junior Tom Wiacek (Bolton Landing, N.Y.) was the hard-luck loser allowing an unearned run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. Wiacek is now 0-1 on the year.
Junior Matt Bartolomei (Stratford, Conn.) took the loss to even his record at 1-1. Bartolomei pitched well, hurling a complete game (7.2 innings) in which he struck out six, walked two and allowed only five hits. Of Molloy's three runs, only two were earned.
Bridgeport scored both of its runs in the nightcap in the top of the third inning on and RBI fielder's choice by junior Matt Ranaudo (Milford, Conn.) and a run scoring double by senior Peter Barrows (Old Saybrook, Conn.).
The Purple Knights and the Lions will continue their series on Sunday morning in Bridgeport with a single, nine-inning contest. Game time at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard is set for 11:00 a.m.
