Baseball Tops Assumption, 11-4
UB Uses 14-Hit Attack To Raise Its Season Record To 3-0
Ormond Beach, Fla.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team raised its record to 3-0 on the young 2011 season with an 11-4 win over the Assumption College Greyhounds in Ormond Beach, Florida
With the game tied 4-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Purple Knights erupted for four runs in the frame and then added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to pick up the win. Bridgeport banged out 14 hits on the day,
Senior Stefan Wagner (Freemont, N.H.) had three hits and drove in four runs on the day. Also starring at the plate for the Purple Knights on Sunday were senior catcher Mike DeLellis (Marlton, N.J.), who had three RBI and junior Eric Schlitter (Guilford, Conn.) who added three hits.
On the mound, newcomer, junior Shaun Hancock (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) picked up the victory hurling 2 .2 innings of scoreless ball. Fellow newcomer Tom Wiacek (JR, Bolton Landing, N.Y.) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to wrap things up for UB.
Sophomore Chris Maull (Winslow, N.J.) started for Bridgeport, and he worked 4.1 innings allowing four runs (three earned), on seven hits. Chris struck out one and walked none. On the day, Bridgeport pitchers did not issue a walk in their nine innings of work.
The Purple Knights will next be in action on Tuesday, March 15 when they face Bentley University. The game will be played at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, and first pitch is slated for 12 noon.
