Baseball Opens 2011 Season With Doubleheader Sweep Of Assumption
Purple Knights Blank Greyhounds Twice Winning Game One, 1-0, And Taking Game Two, 5-0
Ormond Beach, Fla.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team opened its 2011 in fine style on Saturday afternoon in Ormond Beach, Florida, as the Purple Knights swept a doubleheader from the Assumption College Greyhounds (3-8), winning game 0ne, 1-0, and completing the sweep with a 5-0 win in game two.
In the opener, juniors Nick Vautrin (S. Hadley, Mass.) and Matt Bartolomei (Stratford, Conn.) combined on a three-hit shutout, and junior Ryan Barba (Stratford, Conn.) drove in the game's only run in the bottom of the fourth inning to lead UB to the victory.
Vautrin picked up the win in game one pitching five innings in which he allowed only three hits while striking out three Assumption batters without issuing a walk. Bartolomei picked up the save in game one working two innings of scoreless and hitless ball with one strike out.
After earning the save in game one, Bartolomei returned to the hill to start game two, and he picked up the win working five innings of scoreless baseball. Hunter Moffatt (SR, Colonie, N.Y.) worked two scoreless innings to finish the shutout in game two.
Seniors Mike DeLellis (Marlton, N.J.) and Tyler Moffatt (Colonie, N.Y.) plus junior Eric Schlitter (Guilford, Conn.) each had three hits on the day for the Purple Knights.
Bridgeport and Assumption will meet again in Ormond Beach, Florida at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday morning.
