Baseball Sweeps Queens, 3-0 and 8-7

Bridgeport, CT-The University of Bridgeport baseball team used a strong pitching performance in game one and a six-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning in game two to sweep an East Coast Conference doubleheader from the Queens (NY) College Knights on Saturday afternoon. UB took game one, 3-0, and completed the sweep with an 8-7 victory. Bridgeport is now 13-22 overall and 11-18 in conference play. Queens falls to 18-27 overall and 10-19 in the ECC.
 
In game one, senior left-handed pitcher Bobby Swann (Cumberland, RI) was outstanding, tossing a four-hit complete game shut out (his second of 2010) in which he struck out six and walked three. Swann is now 4-5 on the season.
 
The Purple Knights did all their scoring in game one in the first inning, plating three runs on an RBI fielder choice by Ryan Barba (SO, Stratford, CT) and a two-run single by senior Kevin Clements (Vernon, CT).
 
In game two, sophomore Matt Ranaudo (Milford, CT) capped off a six-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning with a game-winning single to right field to give Bridgeport an 8-7 win.
 
Ryan Barba had three hits for UB in game two plus senior Luke Abraham (Cumberland, RI) and sophomore Cody Quinn (Milford, CT) added two hits a piece to pace a 12-hit Purple Knights' attack.
 
Junior Anthony Plomitallo (New Hyde Park, NY) got the winning in game two pitching 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Plomitallo is now 3-4 on the year.
 
Bridgeport and Queens will close out the 2010 season with the rubber game of their five-game East Coast Conference series on Sunday afternoon. Game time is 2:00 p.m. and the contest will be played at West Haven (CT) High School.
